Like in previous years, we're excited to run a waffle stand again at the annual Sommerfest at the refugee shelter in Kirchheim.

If you're in Heidelberg and have some times to spare, we'd love to have you join our president Juliah at the stand! It's a fun way to help, and it's incredibly rewarding to see the kids' faces light up when they receive a freshly made waffle. Every helping hand makes a difference, so if you can come along, we'd be delighted to have you!

Global Issues Book Discussion: That Librarian

Sunday, September 6, 2026, 7–8:00 pm CET

The FAWCO Education Team has selected That Librarian: The Fight Against Book Banning in America by Amanda Jones as our next Global Issues read.

This is a book we believe will spark meaningful conversation across our FAWCO community. Amanda Jones, a small-town librarian in Louisiana, attended a library board meeting to advocate for diverse books and found her life turned upside down. She was harassed, threatened and publicly attacked. Rather than back down, she chose to stand up, even taking legal action against her harassers.

What makes this book especially compelling is how it moves between the deeply personal and the broader global context. Jones connects local book challenges to larger, organized efforts, offering an eye-opening look at what is at stake when access to diverse stories is restricted.

For us, as a global network of engaged citizens and advocates, this topic resonates far beyond one community or country, reflecting the broader issues of access, voice, and representation that shape our world.

The Education Team looks forward to coming together as a global community for this important discussion.

Human Rights Team Open Meeting: What Is Human Trafficking

Tuesday, September 8, 2026, 5–6:00 pm CET

As part of the Target Program's current focus on human rights and the Power Her Path project with Pacific Links, Mary Adams, Human Rights Co-Chair, will facilitate a session on human trafficking. The session will provide an overview of the definition and scope of human trafficking, identify vulnerable populations, examine key sources of data and documentation, explore the “3P” framework—Prevention, Protection, and Prosecution—and discuss current challenges, emerging trends and opportunities for action.
